The match was organised through the Talk Angling forum.

Shane came second with 41lb 12oz, all caught on the pellet waggler and on the method feeder using our Match Team 'Gold' method mix. Shane added some micros in to the mix for a bit of extra pulling power.

In Shane's own words 'your onto a winner with the mix'. After a late spring/early summer of testing, it's time we got this on sale in the shop.

Shane is coaching tomorrow at bullocks farm for about 28 kids so it should prove to be an interesting day, with mixed skill levels. Thursday he is fishing a match on Viaduct fishery and friday back down Trinity so should be a good couple of days fishing.

Canal Fishing, 9th July with Kris

I got a call from Kris on Saturday afternoon. He had decided to have a few hours on the canal in town. He got himself a pint of maggots and also took along a kilo of our Blacksilver Baits Canal Black groundbait.

The 'urgent' phone call was because of two things;

1: he was running out of groundbait, and could i drop off another kilo to him
and
2: he was having a red letter day catching roach, but Kris had forgotten his camera.

Only too happy to oblige, i went down around 4pm with both a kilo of groundbait and the camera. Kris arrivd at 4.30am and we loaded the van and set off.

Conditions looked perfect upon arrival. Sun had not yet broken the horizon, it was light but slightly overcast, with a light breeze from the west. Excited we set about mixing up the groundbait and getting set up. We were fishing by about 5.30am.

Bream fishing is a bit of a waiting game. Rarely do you drop straight on them so we had plenty of time to set up after initially balling in our groundbait. The mix was the same as used last season to great effect; 30% Big Bream Original, 30% River, and 30% Molehill soil. We were fishing worm or red maggot, with a change bait of either sweetcorn or soaked 8.5mm pellet.

The wind had started to get up by about 6am, and the clouds were getting heavier. No problem for breaming, as some chop on the water and overcast conditions are usually condusive for a good session.

Kris had a bite early on, and almost landed a bream of about 4 to 6lb (always hard to estimate in the water) Got it to the lip of the landing net before it pulled free. A shame but good signs....or so we thought.

I didn't get a bite for about 3 hours, and when i did they were timid bites, not what i have come to expect from river bream who usually bite so positive. By the end of the morning i had had only about 4 or 5 knocks, and i had lost a good fish at range.

Kris did better than me. He landed 3 fish in the morning, and lost a couple more. The biggest landed was 7 1/2lb, and the other two were 5lb and 6lb. A nice trio of fish. By lunchtime the wind had got the better of me. I'd had enough of what was proving to be a gale! (nearly lost my brolly as it got pulled from the ground and almost down river. By 1.30pm we called it quits.

Sporadic bites, cold blustery wind and no fish for me is not a good start to the river season. Nothing like the catches we had last autumn...but then again it is early in the season....there's always next time!

Kris's bream!

<img style="cursor:pointer; We are by no means fair weather fishermen here at Blacksilver Baits, but wind is just not fun to fish in. But we thought we'd risk it. As it turns out the rain came but wind did not which was great.

We have a few groundbaits on test and Stu had been given the chance to try our new 'Match Team Green' groundbait. It's a fishmeal based method mix, very light and fluffy but quite inert. It breaks down very quickly leaving a bed of groundbait to fish over. Experience at this fishery has shown us that most fish are in the margins, so Stu decided to use the groundbait by balling in rather than on the feeder. He fished at about 3m from the bank in 4ft of water. Fishing caster over the top he was into the roach almost straight away. Fingers crossed the carp and bream would move in. Despite all hopes, only one solitary bream got caught. Loads of skimmers and roach, with a smattering of gudgeon and perch.

Then at the end of the session around 4pm, he hooked into a carp. A beautiful fin perfect 4lb common. That would be his last fish of the day. At weigh in just after 4pm he had caught a respectable 16lb of fish. The 4lb carp and 12lb of bits.

I had been testing another new addition to our groundbait range, our new 'Bloodworm Groundbait' (working title). I had decided to fish the waggler at about 12m out, as i had seen another angler catching at that distance on Wednesday. Fishing hard on the bottom with a traditional set up for bream to show lift bites (ssg's on the deck), i fished caster over a bed of groundbait. Initially i balled in 4 balls of the Bloodworm Groundbait, and settled in for a spell to wait for the arrival of the bream. After about 15 minutes the float lifted before slowly sinking below the water. I struck and hit into a bream of about 3lb. This would be my first and last in that spot. I gave it another half an hour before switching to the margin swim.

As no other bites were coming on the waggler, i switched to fishing next to a small bunch of lillies, about 6ft from the bank. I had about 3ft of water under the float. I had set up a 3m whip, fishing the flick tip. i wanted roach!

I had already introduced 3 balls of bloodworm groundbait into the swim at the start of the session, so i regularly flicked in a pinch of casters about every 30 seconds or so. It wasn't long before the roach responded. The more casters i put in the quicker and more positive the bites became. Then, as the float buried, i hit into one of many bream. Strike and hit a solid fish, adrenalin surge, and hope that i could hold the fish on the whip. It's a brave option on water that holds carp and bream, but the rig held and 1 bream landed. More casters into the swim and back into the roach. Then another bream, then back into the roach.

It continued like this for a few hours while the rain lashed down onto the brolly. Then it went quiet. The float buried and it was like hitting a wall. Big swoosh and a carp roared off. Luckily the size 18 hook pulled free. I would not have stopped it on the 3m whip. Sigh of relief that i still had my rig, flick of casters into the swim and the roach started again!

In all i had about 8 bream between 2 and 3lb, and lots of roach, for a total of 26lb.

In previous tests at this fishery of the bloodworm groundbait i have had 16lb, 27lb and 42lb, all bream and roach. Tests are going well.

Rain eventually stopped play and we went to warm up with a pint!!

Friday Afternoon

Had a quick session at the local commercial on Friday afternoon.

The swims that i wanted to fish were already taken so had to try another. In the end i chose a swim at the far end of the lake. Wind was in my face, bit overcast and the surface was very choppy. Great, i thought, classic bream conditions. I was very wrong!

Fished the deepest part, about mid way to the island on long pole, short line. Depth about 5 ft. Cupped in some Black Magik Fine groundbait and a handful of maggots. Also fed the margin to my right at about 18" to 2ft deep with maggot.

Put in and was straight into bits. Roach and Rudd. lovely. As my Grandad used to say 'little'uns bring big'uns', so continued with the far deep swim despite the wind. Kept getting bits until i finally hooked into a small carp about 3lb. landed then straight back into the bits. Where were the bream? This lake usually produces after about an hour so i was puzzled. Perfect conditions so where were they?

Decided to give the swim a rest and switched to the margin swim. Fished a 3m whip with flick tip, single red maggot. Straight into the roach and small perch. Nice respite from the wind, as i turned up my collar and turned sideways. Kept feeding a pinch of maggot every minute or so, and the little'uns kept coming. Then hooked into something much bigger. Fear struck as i was on the 3m whip on 1lb bottom, sized 20's hook. Just couldn't hold it and the hook pulled out. So back to the maggot feeding and catching the small roach. Then again hooked a 'big'un'. Hooked pulled again. Bear in mind that this lake is a silvers lake so the carp only run to about 4-5lb, and its mostly roach, rudd, crucians and bream in here.

Frustrated i went back to the far swim to see if the bream were feeding. nothing. the swim was dead!

I'd had enough of the wind by now (about 5.30pm) so started to pack up. I'd paid my money though so rather than leave i set up a rod with a small waggler and jumped over to the carp lake behind me. fed the remaining groundbait next to the lillies and went to get my kit. got back and the water was a swirl of silt where the carp were feeding. dropped in and within a minute was into the first of 12 small carp. Biggest i had was a Ghost carp about 5lb. Had great fun for about an hour and half, but was still frustrated that the bream on the other lake had not shown. Light started to dim so packed up.

Walking back to the car i passed my first swim. Argh! the water was fizzing with bream bubbles over the area that i had been feeding all afternoon.

Bream...I will get my revenge...oh yes. next time! he he.

90lb Bream on River Trent

Had a fantastic short session on the Trent a couple of weeks back.

Arrived at 6am in muggy, dull weather. Set up the feeder rod and balled in about 12 jaffa sized balls of groundbait laced with sweetcorn.

The mix consisted of 33% Big Bream Original, 33% River and 33% mole hill soil that was behind my swim. After riddling the mix was light and fluffy, but held together well, and with the addition of the mole hill soil also had some extra weight to get it to the bottom before breaking up.

Nothing much happened for the first 2 hours. Chris who i was fishing with had had a couple of bream to about 6lb. then i had one about 5lb, but the sport was very sporadic. Bites were very slow.

Then about 10am my tip bent round like lightning and i was into the first of what was to become a big haul for a short session.

Fishing section of lobworm on the hook and using a heavy cage feeder to keep the groundbait topped up, no sooner had i set the tip when it bent round again.

In all i had 90lb of bream, all between 5lb and 8lb. ( we weighed the biggest and it was just over 8lb).

Strange thing was that Chris in the next swim, fishing virtually the same bit of water struggled to get 6 fish over the session, yet only yards downstream i was hitting the shoal on every cast.

I ran out of lobworm about half way through and had to find another bait quickly. luckily i had soaked some 8mm coarse pellet the night before and continued to catch the bream on the new hook bait.

Fantastic!

200lb Haul of Irish Tench - August 2010

One of our loyal customers required some groundbait for a fishing trip to Ireland.

After looking at our current range he decided to take along a load of our Black Magik groundbait. The best catch of Tench we here at Blacksilver Baits have ever seen.

A massive well done to Peter.

Winter 2009/10

Winter 2009/2010

Well, Winter is under way now, and the fishing is getting tougher! We are not deterred however.

Blacksilver Baits has a great range of groundbaits that suit the colder temperatures and slower feeding patterns of coarse fish during the winter and early spring season.

Black Magik groundbait works well in winter for silver fish like roach, skimmers and crucian carp, as in the warmer summer months, but if the fishing gets really tough our Black Magik Fine Groundbait offers a finer groundbait blend with much less feed content. All the attraction but no feed!

Canal Black groundbait is also a low feed groundbait ideal for colder and harder to fish venues where little feed is required but where a black cloud can help to pull in the fish.

Big Carp Winter Groundbait is a low protein Carp Groundbait, designed for colder water where again feed content is kept to a minimum, but where carp attraction is key to bring those few feeding fish to your hook bait. Ideal as an accompaniment to winter boilies and winter paste or pellet fishing.

Of course we have a selection of plain crumb groundbaits, and seed baits. A few canal boats had gone by and opened the locks below our swims killing the sport. Just as we had decided to pack up for the day Stu cast to the far bank next to an old gnarled hawthorn bush overhanging the cut. His float dipped and he had the first of the two pictured Perch. Encouraged we put off packing up for half an hour and then his float dipped again for the second, and bigger, perch. Very nice for a slow day.

Black Magik 2009

NEW FOR 2009

A brand new blend for 2009.

We wish we had discovered the recipe years ago as it is outstanding on the majority of waters and for most fish. Our personal bests were smashed on our local silver fish water in the autumn when testing this groundbait. In a 7 hour session we recorded two bags of mixed carp, crucians, tench, bream , roach and rudd to weigh in at 45lb and 60lb. On a water that usual catches are in the 30 to 40lb mark.

Blended with a new vision in mind, we set out to really push the intensity of flavour so that you need very little loose feed or free offerings when using BLACK MAGIK. Small regular feeding with half golf ball sized balls, mixed straight from the bag, will have your swim fizzing in a fish feeding frenzy.

Very easy to mix, requiring only a little water and a quick riddle, Black Magic is a fluffy active mix.

The smell when you open the bag is mind blowing. No wonder the fish do not stand a chance!

Find out more at http://www.blacksilverbaits.co.uk/

Blacksilver Standard Groundbaits

The new year ahead looks uncertain for many. Despite us having loads of orders for bait coming in, we’re taking nothing for granted. Far from sitting on our laurels wondering what will happen to us as the credit crunch enters 2009, we’ve been working hard to ensure we cover all bases. Thanks to having several new bait options, such as boilies, soft hooker pellets and more groundbaits in development, I believe we’re in a far less risky position than some. Without a doubt, I think it also helps having enough experience to maintain a high quality fishing bait product to offer to our fellow anglers.

So to our new bait venture; Blacksilver Baits Standard Bait range, a value for money range of groundbaits designed to sit somewhere between the Simply Crumb range and our Premium Groundbait ranges. Using the same ingredients as used in some of our other groundbaits, such as those found in the Big Bream and Big Carp baits, we can offer a cost-efficient groundbait range that is still able to provide a good quality product that attracts the fish in when it matters.

The Standard Groundbait range is available in the following four types:

Canal
River
Lake
Brasem

On sale now at www.blacksilverbaits.co.uk

Happy New Year!

Well Christmas is over for another year! I hope that Santa brought everyone that new fishing kit you wanted or needed.

Myself, i got a new luggage set. Its suprising how quickly one can outgrow his current fishing luggage and require a new set. A punishing couple of seasons testing baits and new fishing venues put paid to my old faithful fishing luggage and a new set was needed badly in time for the spring.

I cant wait to get out on the bank in 2009. Especially as we have new groundbaits under test for the colder months.

Now that my fishing and business partner, Stuart, has his new set of fishing box wheels, we can really give the canals a good winter pole fishing session.

But first, we will be hitting the Pike in our local stretch of the Grand Union Canal in Leicester. We have had a few new Pike lures sent to us to try. And by the look of them, if they dont work nothing will!

An update of our Pike fishing will be posted next weekend!

In the meantime, we have a number of large groundbait orders to get sent out to our faithful customers ready for the new year!

So if i dont get another chance before, i'll wish everyone a very happy New Year, and lets hope that 2009 will provide us with some good fishing!

Phill
Blacksilver Baits

Canal Cloud
(colour: Natural ; Quantity: 1kg bags)

'Canal Cloud' has been specifically designed for Pole Fishing and Competition Fishing.

'Canal Cloud' is a Light, Fine Groundbait for use when fishing on-the-drop or in clear water where a cloud of bait falling through the swim will gain the confidence of shy fish or fish that prefer to feed mid water.

It is best used in a pole cup, mixed either on the dry side so it explodes in the water or as a very effective slop. The fine particles fall through the water slowly creating a feed ball under the pole tip. Great for picking off silver fish at pace for bagging up in matches.

Best suited for stillwaters with little or no tow on them to create an intense hot spot of feeding activity.

No binders are added to this mix so it breaks up as soon as it hits the water.

All silver fish respond well to this Groundbait but Roach in particular find this mix extremely attractive! Superb for maggot, caster, pinkie or squat work on eiher canals, ponds or stillwaters.

Available in Red and Natural from Blacksilver Baits

£2.90

New Groundbait - Our Challenge for 2009

We have been working hard this year to develop a new groundbait for 2009.

Canal Black is a monumentous groundbait for canals in warmer weather. It pulls in fish left right and centre, and really excels when fishing on the whip or pole on the far shelf for roach, perch, rudd and smaller fish like gudgeon.

The time spent in 2008 developing this super fine groundbait, specifically for canals and smaller stillwaters has paid off, and this will be one of a number of new releases onto the market in 2009.

Also developed and ready for release is our new Commercial Water Groundbait. Blended for bagging sessions on carp and silver fish commercial waters. We beat nearly all of our commercial water records in 2008 whilst testing this bait. In one session alone we smashed our record at Whetstone Gorse on the match lake. Stu had a fantastic 46lb of roach, crucians, and skimmers, only to be beaten into second by Phill landing 60lb of roach, cucians and skimmers, with the odd small tench. All caught on maggot on the pole at 10m.

We are sure that any angler who gives this a go will increase their catch rate on commercials dramatically.

See our web shop for further details
www.blacksilverbaits.co.uk

Blacksilver Baits is a family run business, based in Leicestershire, with over 55 years of angling experience to call upon when designing and developing new groundbaits.

Our goal is to provide you, the thinking angler, with a range of baits designed specifically to help you catch those specimen fish or to help you bag up on match waters. It's been a busy month for us, here at Blacksilver Baits. Our groundbaits are flying off the shelf at the moment and are being used up and down the country by loads of anglers who have discovered our baits. We have not had the time to update the blog for a few weeks.

We have some great deals for groundbait, particle baits, pellets and groundbait additives on our website, with new bait products in development for release later this year.

We have had time to get out on the bank though! We took a trip to Norfolk again for our 'start of season' bream session on the River Yare. Night fishing we used our 'Big Bream Original' groundbait with sweetcorn to bag us some nice sized slabs.
We have also concentrated on a few local commercial waters where there are a mixed bag of silvers and carp using our 'Silver Match' groundbait.
I'll be posting further details of these sessions in the next few days or so, with a few pictures of our catches for you all to see.

If you have not done so already, then please visit our website and check out our range of fishing baits on sale.

As always if there is anything you would like to know about any of our groundbaits then please do not hesitate to contact us. we are always pleased to help!

Phill
Blacksilver Baits

Sunday 1st June - Carp and Bream fishing

With June already upon us, we thought it high time to get out on the bank of one of our favourite waters and give the bream and carp some of our most excellent fishmeal based groundbait, 'Big Carp - Summer'

We were testing out a range of complimentary boilies to fish alongside the 'Big Carp' groundbait. On the go were 14mm and 18mm 'Titan Crab'n'Mussel' fishmeal boilies, and 18mm 'Titan Blood'Belachan'n'Garlic'

After setting up and introducing a bed of our groundbait we set up the boilies on a hair rig and set them to work. The carp in recent weeks have been spawning so they have been a touch finicky when it comes to feeding, so we were in for a wait, but the bream were on the bait pretty quickly. They only run to about 5lb in this water but they are old bruisers, black and nobbly, with unusual fight for their size. Stu , was first in with a small bream about 2 lb on a size 8 hook and 18mm Crab'n'mussel boilie. This was soon followed by me landing a 4 1/2 lb bream on a hair rigged 18mm 'Blood'Belachan'n'Garlic' boilie. These were soon followed by another brace of bream each all to about 3 lb each. The carp were reluctant to show though and after landing a 3 lb common carp and then a 7lb common carp the action tailed off, before Stu had a 2lb roach on a 14mm boilie....now i thought Roach didnt like fishmeal. Just shows that anything can and often does happen in fishing.

'Big Carp' groundbait - both Summer and Winter versions is available to buy via our website or through selected tackle shops around the country.

'Titan' Boilies are a work in progress bait and will be launched in 2009.

Cheers
Phill
www.blacksilverbaits.co.uk

Improve Your Coarse Fishing!

Blacksilver Baits are to be included in a Baits for 08 style feature in the July edition no 208 of 'Improve Your Coarse Fishing' magazine.

We have featured our two 'Big Carp' groundbait mixes - one Summer and one Winter.

Check the feature out and get our tips for using the groundbait in either the magazine or direct on our website.

www.blacksilverbaits.co.uk

Exciting times ahead for Blacksilver Baits

2008 is looking to be a busy time for us.
Already we have a customer using our baits in the upcoming Irish Classic match against some of the top UK and European match anglers, and many more using our groundbaits in matches up and down the country to great effect.
We have lined up a number of adverts, features and reviews in the top angling press, due to be published in April and June, then some later in the autumn.
